Established in 1962, Asthma Australia is a leader in lung health and asthma research. Australia continues to have one of the highest rates of asthma worldwide, with about 2 million people — or 1 in 10 Australians — living with the condition. Furthermore, a recent survey released by Asthma Australia in early 2015 shows that poorly managed asthma could cause health issues extending far beyond immediate physical repercussions. The study reviewed 533 individuals aged 12 to 25 years old, and the numbers showed that those with poorly managed asthma were twice as likely to develop mental health conditions compared to the general population. Researchers suggest that people with poorly managed asthma often fall into a cycle of relying on temporary over-the-counter relievers rather than long-term care, leading to higher levels of mental distress over time.
